Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover Furthering the gap that people draw between Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown is “Random Spirit Lover.”
Previous Sunset Rubdown efforts were held up in a bright light, scrutinized for similarities and differences for difference sake. This newest outing features great string work that calls to mind a chaotic gathering of accordions and guitars. Spencer Krug’s vocals have a frantic wale that can quickly convert to Space Oddity Bowie on “Magic Vs. Midas.” While other works from this band have danced on the periphery of a dreamlike state, “Random Spirit Lover” immerses fully into an alternate realm of clashing cymbal and climaxes. Transitioning into a marching ballad becomes a bit of a shock at first, but the entire affair feels so welcoming that the ear familiarizes as though this were an old fairy tale being told to an adult.
