NO AGE – Weirdo Rippers The on–purpose distortion can be enough to make you check your speakers twice.
What No Age is doing is evolving the typical rock formula. If they have to drop a few guitars down a flight of stairs or pound on the drums like an elementary class, then they will. The Los Angeles duo’s album Weirdo Rippers is what Daydream Nation would have sounded like if it came out of the West Coast in today’s over bleached music industry. It’s a bit of a buzz kill when songs, that average around two minutes, die off just when things are getting good. Other tracks, like “Sun Spots,” are merely filler with over fuzzy distortion and guitars grinding against amps. And the song “Dead Plane” could be three songs in one as it goes through the quiet intro and concludes with an anthem that’s right on target with the rest of the album. You could say that it gets lost in the middle, just like some parts of the album, but for going out of the box, these guys do it right. By Nathan Solis Listen to the album at Amazon.com
