Review -TimeOut НОВАЯ МУЗЫКА! New Music! - St. Petersburg, Russia
The crowd gathered at the beach on the shore of the Neva River. The historic Hermitage and the river embankment served as a backdrop for the diverse musical acts presented on the stage. Although all the groups were native to Russia, they performed in a variety of languages. The visitors of the festival relaxed on the sand in the fresh breeze from the river. Everyone found something for their taste. Some lounged to the sound of jazz melodies, some danced to pulsing electronic beats, some jumped and screamed along with glam rockers.
The festival started really slowly with the mellow music of YaD and Art of Sound. C`нега (S'nega) put on an interesting show with costume changes, props, and clever lyrics. The glam metal sound of Sweat was a throwback to the 80's. Sung in English, it shook the crowd with its roaring bass and crass lyrics such as "I wanna fuck all the girls in the world." In contrast to Sweat, Газеты пишут (Newspapers Say) Kaliningrad borne group that followed, brought a modern sound and look to the stage, drawing forth a distinct group of fans whose enthusiasm was shown in singing along, waving banners and presenting flowers to the singer. Following after Газеты пишут, the intergalactic presentation of SpaceCats rocketed in from Moscow. In their silver sparkling outfits shimmering in the warmth of the sunset, the group sang its catcalls over electronic rhythms. At the conclusion of the first day, two well known groups, 2H company and Yogo!Yogo!, stirred up audience that grew into bouncing mass upon their arrival.
The second day brought more new music to the ears of St-Petersburg. The soft spoken lyrics and the athmospheric style of Sensiva eased the people back into the music festival. Continuing in the synthesizer fashion, Monostereo perked up with dance beat. Девочки не хотят (Girls do not want) mixed the rhyming of rap with energy of rock. The band Млад и Стар (MladiStar) woke up the crowd. Their acid jazz music got the audience up and dancing, forgetting all about the sand in their shoes. The rock band Мыши - рокеры с Марса (Mice- Rocksters from Mars) took the stage with energy and attitude. They were followed by modern jazz group Лаччо (Lachcho) whose vocalist sang his heart out to all the women in the crowd. Non cadenza band brought more piano oriented jazz to the listeners. The highlight of the evening, Саша Фролова (Sasha Frolova) lit up the stage with neon outfits, flashing lights, and futuristic high fashion. The presentation was only marred by her short performance. Well polished sound of Yana Fortep and Fushi's smooth jazz concluded the two day festival. BACK |
