Xiu Xiu at The Echo Thursday March 18

Jamie Stewart’s breathy voice and confessional tone is enough to make you think that he’s a very small mouse, with a very big pair of balls. Stewart’s static project, Xiu Xiu, emerges from the woods this Thursday for a set at The Echo, where the crunch of drums and guitar will meld with that big-balled mouse, with freshman band member Angela Seo tickling the keys on the piano and synth, where bold gestures will be made in the name of something invisible, but entirely tangible. Xiu Xiu’s Dear God, I Hate Myself harbors a myriad of re/inflections into Stewart’s melancholy stained mind, like “This Too Shall Pass” a obvious candidate for the Bowie throne if Kevin Barnes should pass up the offer. Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier stamped his initials in the studio with the production, but on the road, this is all Stewart’s vessel, no matter how many personalities/members he brings with him.
